Notts County v Luton Town - Saturday 6th September 2003
The Collection - The Match - The Fans
Saturday
6th September 2003 was a highly emotional day for the long-suffering
supporters of Notts County. Faced with the daunting task of raising £250,000 in
6 days it was quite feasible that the oldest professional league club in the
world could be playing its last ever game. However two things happened. Firstly
while we may not have the most supporters we have a fantastically loyal group
and there was never a chance that we would accept this situation. And secondly
the football community decided to show their support too.
As
the pictures show, not only did the young and old turn out for Notts but so did
our friends across the country from our local neighbours to premiership fans to
division 3 sides. All came together in a demonstration that the game is not just
about high profile superstars, it is also about community, tradition and local
passion and it proved that real fans care.
We organised collections, commemorative T shirts (we even sold the shirts off
our backs where required), sold records and sponsored the singer not to sing and
late in the evening when the cash was counted a staggering £50, 000 had been
collected in a day.
In
total we have now raised £125,000 in a week. Its not enough yet but with the
support of the City Council we were granted further time by the football league
yesterday to find a long term solution. We are under no illusions that it will
not be difficult but Saturday showed it can be done because our fans and friends
care…… and we even scored a goal!
