NOTTS COUNTY SUPPORTERS TRUST

NEWSLETTER

No.3 – 15 March 2003

Welcome to the 3rd newsletter of the temporary working group established to set up the Supporters Trust. Whilst results on the field continue to improve, the situation off the field gives more cause for concern. The close season fast approaches and a solution has to be found, and found quickly. Without wishing to over dramatise, there is every chance the club might not make it to the start of next season. By joining the Trust, and giving the Supporters a voice, we will at least have an involvement in the discussions that will undoubtedly shape the future of our football club.

Present Situation at the Club

Despite recent speculation in the media a solution to our long term survival seems no nearer. The season ends in seven weeks and with that the club’s ability to earn money through the turnstile (and pay the bills). Such circumstances would surely focus administrator’s mind, being under extreme pressure to resolve the situation one way or another. This situation scares us and for this reason we have approached the administrator with a view to exploring the possibility of taking a more active role in the rescue of the club. Whilst it is still early days we believe this to be a viable course of action. The more members we have the stronger our case.

Launch date – now Friday April 4th

The formal launch of the Notts County Supporters Trust will now take place at Meadow Lane on Friday 4th April. The meeting will be held in the Oriental Suite, doors opening at seven for a seven thirty start. Your support on the night is vital to the long-term success of the Trust. The event will last for no more than two hours and will be supported by several high profile names. Above all it is your 1st chance to join. More details will be available closer to the day.

Penalty Shoot Out

Keep your eyes out at half time for a penalty shoot out between Notts County and Chesterfield Football Supporters Society (CFSS). Those taking part have bid in a blind auction for the right to tread the hallowed turf. Any monies raised will be donated to Football in the Community. More importantly CFSS should act as an inspiration to us all. They took ownership of their football club two years ago, proving that Trusts can (and do) play an active role.

A big thank you from York City

York City Supporters Trust have expressed their thanks to everyone who contributed in the collection at our Port Vale game. Just under £400 was raised on the night and when added to other collections made at Leicester Middlesborough, Sunderland, and AFC Wimbledon will go along way to help keeping the club afloat. Members of York City Supporters Trust have been very supportive to our cause. You never know, we may have to call on similar support in the very near future.

Words of support

“I think the setting up of the Trust is a very worthwhile initiative and fully support the work of the temporary working group. I would encourage all fans to join up”

Brian Parbutt, Leader, Nottingham City Council

Key members of the Temporary Working Group

In this edition we look at three more people who are working hard behind the scenes.

Fred Mosselmans (Constitution Officer)

Fred has supported Notts for around 30 years and is a season ticket holder in block Z. He regularly contributes to the Pie and represented County on the TV football quiz show 'Do I really not know that'. He also turns out in goal for the NCFC mailing list but says he is   determined to move from saving goals to helping save the club in any way he can. Fred has played a key role to date; liasing with Supporter’s Direct to ensure the Trust is set up in the appropriate manner. He works as a research scientist in the North West.

Nigel King (Secretary)

It is fair to say that Nigel does not really conform to your typical ‘Secretary’ stereotype. At 6ft plus, and weighing in at more than your average midfielder, it is his job to ensure the day to day running of the Trust is as smooth as possible. Originally from Clifton, Nigel is married and lives in the posh part of West Bridgford  (i.e. nowhere near the City Ground). He has followed Notts for well over twenty years, a decision that he had little or no say coming from a family who first started watching the club in the 1920s! He sincerely hopes his work with the Trust will help ensure these traditions survive.

Richard Stanton (Publicity Officer)

Readers of the Football Post will be more than familiar with Richard. His weekly ‘View from the Stands’ column has helped to establish him as one of the leading sports journalists in the country (guess who edits this newsletter?) not to mention a massive following in Mansfield. A supporter since 1971, Richard’s key role is to ensure the role and benefits of the Trust are communicated to as wide an audience as possible. He strongly believes that supporters are entitled to more of a say in the running of their football clubs.

Want to help? Then join the Trust.

We know Supporters Trust work. But we appreciate they attract a lot of cynicism. There is no hidden agenda. The Working Group would like to make that clear. We have only one aim, namely  to work with whoever we need to, to ensure the long term survival of the football club. We urge everyone with similar aspirations to join the Trust when it is launched next month. Even better why not play an active role? The easiest option is to sit back and do nothing. By joining the Trust you can at least say you tried.
